Poor oral hygiene: Tobacco users often brush/floss less, leading to plaque and tartar buildup
Ponni Subbiah, Pfizer's Vice President of Medical Affairs, told me over the phone, "We feel a causal relationship has not been established, but it cannot be excluded, so it's something we need to evaluate." She also pointed out that nicotine withdrawal is associated with neuropsychiatric events and that "it's important to keep in mind that smoking by itself is associated with an increased risk of suicide--heavy smokers more than light smokers." In the meantime, the company believes the label change it recently made warning people about the possible side effects is sufficient
The FDA cannot ban nicotine entirely, but it can prohibit or restrict allowable levels of the constituents and additives in tobacco products, which could include the reduction of nicotine to a subaddictive threshold
