慕尼黑的Piper出版有一個「指南」導遊書系列，是從作者的個人觀點介紹各個國家、城市的特色。定居台灣已十五年的哲學家、小說家施益堅認為：「如果讓我來寫，這個指南恐怕會跟其他的導遊書稍微不一樣。」為了讓德國讀者了解台灣，當然會講到棒球與美食，免不了讚揚中央山脈與花東海岸的美麗，更重要的是台灣的政治情況及其歷史背景。普通導遊書都會避免提及嚴肅話題，但施益堅覺得如果要說台灣的話，這一點無可迴避。德文版於2021年秋天上市，2023年年初即再刷，除了大獲讀者好評，也引發德國人對台灣的好奇心與關注。雖然台灣人可能不需要外國人幫忙說明台灣文化與歷史，但施益堅提到台灣朋友最常問他的問題，就是「你們西方人是怎麼看台灣的呢？」有些人是單純好奇，有些人卻讓他感覺到一種擔心：是不是你們西方人完全看不到我們？透過《台灣使用指南》，台灣讀者可以看到外國作者眼中的台灣，進一步思考跟自己所認知的台灣有何異同，藉此對「台灣認同」得到一些新的啟發。
