17th century suede jacket tilly sand buffcoat Size:XL The top has short sleevesThe buff coat is derived from the simple leather vest (jerkin) worn by hunters and soldiers during the Tudor period, which in turn was based on the padded arming doublet worn under armour. The buff coat was employed as European military clothing from around 1600 until the 1680s. These were usually worn under cuirasses and provided protection against cutting weapons such as rapiers and sabres. Most buff coats had sleeves, whilst some were sleeveless.
